It is frustrating to pull a fresh load of laundry out of the washer only to realize everything smells slightly sour. Front-loading washing machines are wonderful for saving water, but their tight rubber seals easily trap damp detergent residue and mildew. Giving your machine a quick monthly refresh eliminates built-up odors and keeps your clothes smelling naturally clean.
Wipe Down the Rubber Door Gasket
Pull back the soft rubber ring inside the washer door and you will usually find trapped water, lint, and detergent buildup. Spritz a cloth with white vinegar and wipe down every fold of the rubber seal until it is completely spotless. Leaving the door propped open for an hour after each load prevents moisture from getting trapped there in the future.
Run a Hot Wash Cycle with Baking Soda
Pour half a cup of baking soda directly into the empty wash drum and add two cups of plain white vinegar into the liquid detergent dispenser drawer. Set your machine to its hottest wash setting or tub-clean cycle and let it run all the way through. The natural acidity breaks down soapy grime inside the hidden drainage hoses while neutralizing trapped odors for a quick win.
Clean Out the Bottom Drain Filter
Most front-load washers have a small access panel near the bottom front corner that houses the coin trap and drain pump filter. Unscrew the cap over a shallow tray, rinse away trapped debris under warm tap water, and screw it back into place. Taking care of this forgotten filter keeps water draining smoothly and stops musty smells at the source.
